This is the start of a fic that will probably never get any more written, because, well, it's me. Fic writing and me have a difficult relationship where, while I have been told I'm good, I have trouble keeping it up in the long term.

This is, umm... a crossover? Of sorts? Thing is, it's a crossover with a 'verse of my own creation, like Thousand Suns is, only the recognisable half is Harry Potter.

Harry Potter had a bad life. Even he knew enough to realise this. An aunt and uncle who made him do almost all the household chores, a bedroom which was the cupboard under the stairs, being punished for anything and everything as well as mysterious "freakishness", a cousin who was encouraged to beat him up every day...

All of this would be unbearable if it were not for Miss Pridain.

Miss Pridain was the school librarian. She was, unlike most of the teachers, quite young, but in spite her youth she dressed old fashioned clothes like long wool skirts, blouses buttoned right up to the chin, and fussy little cardigans. She wore her hair in an elaborate bun that succeeded in making her look very severe, even more-so due to her unusually grey hair.

Harry knew from his frequent visits to the school nurse what ordinary grey looked like close up (injured feet from several incidents with Dudley had allowed him to study Mrs Templeton's hair as she had treated him). It was a mix of dark hair and white hair. Miss Pridain did not have that, she had silver grey hair from root to tip.

But really, that was the only strange thing about her looks, besides the style of clothing that is.

The other strange thing about her was that when the whole school staff was under constant threat of being fired due to Uncle Vernon's influence, Miss Pridain still treated Harry with kindness and caring. She also never seemed to be affected by any of Vernon Dursley's attempts to get rid of her.

She was by far Harry's favourite adult, even beating the slightly batty Mrs Figg, who was probably the only person in Little Whinging who did not believe Petunia's tales of Harry's delinquency and was always happy to have Harry over to visit with her and her myriad cats.

Everything changed the day Harry somehow got transported to the library roof.

Barely a minute after realising the strange position he was in, Harry found himself almost falling to his death in shock when, unnoticed by him, Miss Pridain appeared on the roof next to him. He was saved, thankfully by surprisingly quick reflexes on her part as she grabbed him by his baggy school sweater and yanked him back from the precarious slope and, in even more surprise, into the librarian's office inside the building they had just been on the roof of.

"Dear, dear me. I had been hoping this would hold off for a bit longer, but I guess that was a fool's dream at best." Miss Pridain muttered as immediately set to work searching through her desk drawers. "I suppose I was lucky that I was sorting books instead of being off in the staff room today, it would have been a bit conspicuous to vanish in the middle of everyone."

Harry could only sit, open-mouthed, he had no idea what was going on.

"Do close your mouth Harry dear, you are not a cod fish!" Miss Pridain said as she turned to him, apparently finished with her search. "Anyway, I think it best if you take this, it should help make things a bit easier for you." With that, she handed Harry a small medallion on a plain silvery chain.

Harry looked closely at the medallion. It had on the front an image of smiley face crowned with a jester's cap, the back had a stylised image of fire.

A/N: If Miss Pridain sounds a bit Mary Sue... it's because she is. I have never denied that, in fact have acknowledged and embraced it, as an act of acceptance of the faults of my characters. Mikaela Pridain is, of course, Harliquin, when she's being... as normal as she is capable of being.

I have plenty of history of contemplating what would happen if my Original Characters ended up in various worlds. Harliquin isn't even the first I have considered in HP either, the first - I think - was Mimi, who I originally thought to be a Slytherin. The biggest issue with my OCs is the tendency for them to tip over into Suishness, which I remain worried about in TS, more-so for Mareph than Oraania.

That's one of the reasons this particular story will never carry on, Harliquin would end up steam-rolling over everything in her mission to make Harry's life better, and be all the more of a Sue for it. *Shrug*

ETA: Well I don't know if anyone will see this edit, but I'm putting these pics in anyway. They were experimental makeovers of my Mikaela Pridain sim (who I played in the Showtime world, working her through the Acrobat pofression (though I didn't get far) under the stage name of "Harliquin"), dressed as best as I could do in line with this ficlet.

Miss Pridain seems like a very intriguing character to me, and I would be interested to read more about her - although I think that she would work better in her own setting rather than trying to share the spotlight with Harry. :) I enjoyed reading your description of her, and I am very fond of all librarians!

ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Orin Crazy)

The basic idea behind this is a bog standard "Powerful god-like character steps in and gives Harry and hand that makes his life better" plot. Mikaela would probably become a teacher at Hogwarts and interfere in life there as well.

Admittedly, I think she's the only one of her family who'd turn up in HP-verse (Mikaela is Mareph's daughter), but she'd have her own reasons for being there that relate to her own background (long story that involves a war against a race of demons). Helping Harry would help her because her enemy decides to aid Voldemort... or Dumbledore, if I felt like making a Dumbledore bashing fic out of it. I have a fondness for those.
