Well I managed to get everything done today I wanted, and maybe a slight bit more.

I've got my new Baldur's Gate discs, and have even transfered them into the old BG2 case (a four-disc case - just right for the two basegame discs and the two expansions), I splashed out a bit and got myself a new cap, since my old green one that I've had since I was 11 has mould on it and I doubt it would get through a bleach treatment without serious damage, and having remembered about it on Monday, I went and picked up a a poster (one on a hard backing board) I had on laybuy and a picture frame store...Here Be Dragon )
I am summarily naming it "Firkraag", after the red dragon in BG2 who thinks it a great idea to take out his revenge against a dead man on the dead man's foster child.

That picture, I saw it a few weeks ago and it immediately struck me as the perfect D&D red dragon - big, mean and evil, and ready to burn you to a crisp.

Oh, and the new hat I mentioned? Blue with a red Autobot symbol on it. The old green hat has been remanded to the proverbial circular file.

Well I went and investigated the availability of a new set of BG discs - the result is that it will cost me $40 to buy the set.

I didn't have that today, but I really doubt EB will run out of it before Friday - BG is a bit on the old side and I suspect buyers of the game these days are much like me- old fans replacing faulty discs.

To console myself until Friday, I am installing Icewind Dale. I'll need to hunt out my copy of DaleKeeper too...

I found this. It's the game map for BG1.

I have a copy of it taped to the wall behind my desk but an extra copy is welcome.

Turns out that unless I can get a new copy of the game, I may not even be able to play out Durlag's Tower (not that I mourn missing it much - if you've read my previous BG posts, you'll know how much I love Durlag's Tower). I tried to send the team over to the Tower only to have the game hang in the process of loading.

Bleh, I hate game faults - as much in BG as I do in the Sims!

When playing a dungeon you know has killer booby traps, it is not a good idea to blithely send your tank mage off into suspicious nooks and crannies on her own.

I managed to get Dynaheir permanently killed, much to my disgust, and the last save is probably an old one - I wouldn't be surprised if I'm back at the start of Ulcaster School.

(Note to the ignorant: I was playing through a couple of the optional dungeons - Ulcaster School and Firewine Bridge. Ulcaster isn't too bad and doesn't have any completely killer traps, but Firewine has a couple of lightening traps that hit bloody hard.)

Still not looking forward to Durlag's Tower, which I think I should should try before I move on to Cloakwood, not that I'm looking forward to Cloakwood either, but I don't have the fear of spiders these days as I did while first playing the game. The real bitch to fight are Ithilid and Beholders and there's none of either in this game - they only start appearing in the second game, and not until the Underdark section - unless you're unlucky enough to uncover the Ithilid base in the Athkatla sewers *shudder!* (the problem being, Beholders hit really hard with spells, and Ithilid have a really bad spell called something like "Intellect Drain" that practically cripples characters and I still don't know how to cure it).

I was installing BG2 for the sake of getting it done early only to have run into a problem with the second disc. Maybe I'll go track down one of those compilation sets of the whole BG saga and the IWD saga and just toss my current set in the trust that the new ones will be without potential disc degradation, and maybe I won't be constantly swapping around three or four discs while I play because they'll be on DVD ROM instead.

Have to wait until next week though, I only have $10 in my purse and maybe $7 in my account - if I'm lucky.

I am reminded of how boring BG1 can be. It's mostly a lot of random walking around, looking for trouble. Is it any wonder I took to BG2 quickly when I got it? BG2 had more plots and subplots and kept them connected better.

I am still also not particularly looking forward to Durlag's Tower, I have never been able to complete the damn thing! Compared to it, Watcher's Keep with all it's puzzles is a cakewalk!

Still, I want to try get through it all, I haven't completed BG1 since before I got BG2, and as I said, I've never finished Durlag's Tower.

Pointless fact: My Charname (player character in BG parlance) is Anvelice Hyperbole - I made icons from a couple of Sims 3 pictures and named her Anvelice. Other than that, she's pretty much stock standard for a BG PC for me - Half-elven Chaotic Good Fighter/Mage. The whole party is rather stock standard too - Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Dynaheir and Minsc. I won't be getting much into creative parties until I start playing BG2, then I'll really start chip-chopping and changing (the only guarantee is that I'll take Yoshimo to Spellhold and accept Imoen when I get to her, and Sarevok in ToB).

For the time being, I am going back to really old school - I'm going to try playing Baldur's Gate again.

Off the top of your head, right now, what ten 'ships would you likely drop what you're doing to read fic for? Or, alternately, what are the top ten ships that you'll give a fic a chance for, or that you've been dying to write, or that you've been dying to read... These can be new loves, old flames, or something in between. Explain if you like, but you don't have to. Then tell us 3 things these ships say about you. Leave a comment about what you think these ships say about me, then repeat in your own LJ.

Don't have to do that last part unless you really want to. Like Ran, I just copied the meme.
