Yes, I have another plotbunny that is gnawing at me (one of those ones that are really my bedtime imaginings, so they tend to be ridicously romantic and fluffy).
This one happens to feature my Telepathy materia.

So once upon a time, when Cloud was still a kid with a cute ponytail and a dream of joining Shin-Ra, he finds a piece of materia that he keeps as a good-luck charm - he thinks of it as a sign that he will get to be a SOLDIER, like the Great Sephiroth.

To start with, Cloud starts seeing an unknown person in his dreams, but thinks nothing of it. When he does go to Midgar he gets a bit of a surprise when he recognises the uniforms of the Turks as being the same as the person in his dreams wears (most of the time).

Over time, Cloud's dreams become more lucid and he finds out the Turk's name is Vincent Valentine (anyone who knows me aught to have expected as much!). The link eventually becomes clear enough that they can communicate while Cloud is awake as well.

Cloud's POV on Vincent's past starts making the Turk see that he is not totally to blame for the events he was involved in (Lucrecia, Hojo, Sephiroth) and in turn Vincent helps Cloud work on getting into SOLDIER.
Cloud still fails to get into SOLDIER though, but has emotional suport from both Zack and Vincent. (See edit.)

When Vincent hears from Cloud about the mission to Nibelheim he is somewhat surprised that Cloud unknowningly lived in the same town as he is hidden in. He also asks that Cloud find some way to free him, now thinking it better if he does something to make up for his percieved sins (at least, those Cloud hasn't argued him out of believing he has commited) besides just sleeping forever.

The first night in Nibelheim (after suffering through being pestered by his mother about getting a nice girlfriend when he went over to see how she is) Cloud tries to sneak out of the inn so he can go find Vincent but is seen by Zack who pesters Sephiroth into coming.
They catch up with Cloud (I don't quite know at what point, either it when he is trying to open the safe so they save him from Lost Number, or he already got the key and they find him searching for the door to the crypt (depends on whether one believes Lost Number dates from an earlier experiment or if it was created some time during Zack and Cloud's captivity in Hojo's lab).
Despite anything they say, Cloud insists on his objective and gets into the crypt, releasing Vincent.

..............................................

After about this point the plotbunny gets vague, Vincent's presence changes everything about the Nibelheim mission, giving a voice of reason that stops Sephiroth from going insane by giving him the truth of his origins as Vincent knows it - not the mess of confused and totally false info that led him to go crazy in canon.

The materia Cloud found is a Telepathy materia, of course. One of a pair that the other was in Vincent's possession. It also a vague idea that by the time Cloud goes to Nibelheim one or both materia have grown enough they have mastered and spawned new materia. I'm not sure there if it's one or both, but if it's only one then it's Cloud's that is mastered because he has been doing much more than Vincent has.

That is also another way Sephiroth's insanity is prevented - a connection to Vincent through the Telepathy materia giving him much-needed stability.

What happens after this though... well I can imagine finding the monsters in the reactor would still be a shock, but with Vincent there Seph doesn't go insane. I don't doubt however that he would still be very pissed off at Hojo and it goes without saying that Vincent would be as well.
This may be cause for Sephiroth to decide that he wants to stand against Shin-Ra, Vincent with him, Cloud as well because he will stick by Vincent no matter what, and more than likely, after seeing all the same stuff Seph has, Zack as well.

Where it goes from there? Maybe they find AVALANCHE and join them. This is about the point a better mind than I would have to pick up the thread of this story.

Edit:
Just rethinking the point of Cloud and the SOLDIER program, I think it'd actually be better for this plot if he did get into SOLDIER. It means that if he never went through the five years of torture thanks to Hojo he still has more than just his normal human abilities.

This would totally change his attitude on the Nibelheim mission but the core events as I laid out above would still stick. (Though even openly seeing Tifa again his attitude towards her would probably be different, especial with my decidedly Cl/Vin bent.)

Bonus extra linkage! - If self-confidence has a direct correlation to a person's Mako resistance then with far more effective emotional suport supplied by a telepathic link with Vincent Cloud may gain enough acceptance of himself to get through Mako exposure and get into SOLDIER.

Second Edit: I forgot to mention this,
While most of Cloud's dreams of Vincent feature him in a Turk suit a smaller number of them have him in the red-and-black outfit we all know know and love.
The dreams where he wears the red-and-black tend to be ones where the darkest of Vincent's own issues come up.

There is also a personal idea I have about his hair in the red-and-black image being shorter in the dream than it is when he is finally released. This is due to self-image. I am a bit stuck on this idea that a fair bit of the hair-growth between Turk!Vincent (see here) and when he got woken by Cloud was super-slowed growth while he was sleeping. Hence his mental image of himself from right before going to sleep has shorter, neater hair.
On a whole, this is not important, it's just a personal opinion and makes no difference to the general plot.

Third Edit: After partially reading a plot analysis another possible point arises that affects Sephiroth's role in this plot. If, as that post, and the plot analysis it quotes, segests, that Sephiroth and Jenova are two seperate beings mentally, Sephiroth might have his own share of problems as he starts to realise his true nature.

Bonus extra linkage! - This is a perfect plot to allow for Vin-as-Seph's-father-with-complications.
