There is one line all the subs of AC that gets at me. It is curtesy of Cait Sith:

A man! Mr. Cloud's a man!

Huh. So it was really in doubt? I mean sure, I know aaaaaaaall about the crossdressing but... *Blinketh*


What gets me is that I have three subs and all three of them have that line the same. One I'm not surprised about because the grammar in it is uniformly bad, the second could have been left like that because it's shadow_sasuke's parody subs but the third... well I'm starting to wonder if people can't see the innuendo implicit there?

Heheh...I love that line and crack up whenever I hear it.

I suppose fansubbers decided "Cloud's the man" wasn't as interesting as "Cloud's a man?"

Yeah, it's a damned accurate translation. Mind you, I think it's more supposed to mean that he is fighting with his heart in that way that Japanese men are meant to do. It's, um, very Japanese.

Hmm... another of those things totally lost in translation then. Still, for serious subtitles, trading the "a"s for "The"s would be better.

Actually, it is a pretty accurate translation and doesn't break your brain IF you think about it in terms of man vs. boy. In other words, Cait Sith is saying that Cloud's all grown up, a real man's man.

...It's still pretty damned fruity no matter how you look at it, though. >.>
