Doing a Work-for-the-Dole course.
For non-Australians, Work-for-the-Dole is a program where long-term unemployed who are on Centrelink (social security) payments are sent to a business to do work or put in a course to learn new skills.
I was in one that was learning about West Indian pan drums - how to play, how to make, the history behind them - I didn't really put effort into it so I did really learn how to play.
We had taken an upper room in a Police Youth centre, that just happened to have a TV on the wall and while our instructor was doing... something, the morning news was on.
Let's just say, that day didn't really happen at all because we were all to distracted by the news, so the instructor decided to cut the day off early anyway.
So I called Mum, she came and picked me up (I didn't know the bus route that got over there at the time) and went home and was subject to a dozen channels of 24-hour news for the next few days.
That was also at the time we had Foxtel (cable TV), so Mum was flipping over to CNN and Fox News frequently too.
