One of the things about this game that can be a bit aggravating is how one can end up with 4 or 5 quests running at one time.
I always end up running De'Arnise Keep first (at least, first after the Circus), but the first time one leaves Athkatla it is inevitable that one will run into the thugs beating up on Renfield, which dictates a trip back to the Docks.
Entering the Docks with Yoshimo in party results in him saying he has to go see the head of the Shadow Thieves, which is the start of a quest to investigate a thief guild house. The first quest the guildmaster sends one's Charname on takes one to the Temple District.
Entering the Temple district is almost guaranteed to embroil one in the Unseeing Eye quest because to get from the upper entrance (which is where one always appears) around to the temple of Talos (the thief job is to steal a necklace from the Talosian high priestess) will go right by the spot that the Unseeing Eye cultist is proselytizing to the crowd, and as soon as that dialog is over, one from the temple of Helm will be automatically triggered.
Can I just say, if it wasn't for the fact that I cheat like crazy, tackling the Unseeing Eye this early in a game is virtual suicide.
Then the next trip into the Government District had Keldorn (paladin, picked up just outside the Unseeing Eye) wanting to go see his family (his house is in the district) which is a minor quest that ends with him leaving permanently - if you take the route that gives the most EXP. Not that I mind losing him because then I took the Umar Hills quest which would net me two more team members.
I have been chip-chopping and changing teamates - started out with the usual ones in Irenicus's dungeons - Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, and on level 2 Yoshimo. The whole plot of the first half of the game revolves around rescuing Imoen when she gets taken by the Cowled Wizards on escape from Irenicus's dungeon, so obviously, she's not present for the next couple of chapters.
First up, after getting out, one is in Waukeen's Promenade, where there is a circus in town, but something has gone wrong inside the big tent. That is where one can pick up Aerie, the wingless Avariel (winged elves) mage-cleric. Frankly, I refused to keep her after the end of the quest.
I also dumped Jaheira and Minsc before leaving the promenade - Jaheira to get rid of conflicting romances, Minsc because he doesn't seem to be able to use almost anything. What use is a powerhouse character if he can't use most weapons?
I started making up the ranks in the Copper Coronet - Anomen and Nalia - which leads directly into the De'Arnise Keep quest, as it's Nalia's home.
Still, even with Keldorn, that's only five members, and back to four after finishing the family quest for him. But as I said, that's good for going to Umar Hills on, I get the lead through the Valygar contract, then pick up Valygar before heading up to the Temple Ruins. Mazzy Fentan is to be found in the ruins - which fills out to a full team then.
Once I got back to Athkatla after that, I had to deal with the funeral of Nalia's father, plus the resulting kidnapping of her, Anomen's family crisis (I'm taking the Chaotic Neutral route this time - I've played out the Lawful Good one so many times it's not funny, and even if I won't get the full effect here (not romance with Ano), I get to see some of the effects), and then finish the second part of the Thief Guild, before heading into the Planar Shpere (Valygar's quest).
I did have to replay the entry into the Sphere and dump Nalia before going in, because one of the joinable NPC mods I have is Goo. Basically, Goo is a joinable floating eyeball - well, he uses a Gauth sprite (a small green Beholder) and apparently has really bad breath. He is however a straight up fighter, so he's now one of my tanks.
Right now, I have my team standing outside the Windspear Hills ruins, just about to go in. Yey I get to face down Firkraag! Another quest non-cheaters should put off until later on - Firkraag is a hell of fight, though both he and the shadow dragon in the Umar Hills Temple Ruins can be put off until later anyway.
I still have a few more team rearrangements that I expect to do - at some point Mazzy will get a call from home about family problems, but I'm not sure when the timer on that starts - I may need to go to Trademeet to trigger it. Anyway, when that happens, she leaves the team. I do have the Viekang mod that could fill her spot - Viekang is a guy who teleports whenever he gets scared and it looks like someone modded him to be joinable. I guess it depends on if he's joinable in Trademeet.
There's also the fact that I'm trying something else a little different - I'm going to go with Bodhi in the guild war. Yes, I know, after the all the time I've known this game and the amount of times I've played it, I know Bodhi is Irenicus's righthand vamp and I'll face her later on, but as of yet, I've never fought the guild war on her side. Besides, another mod I have is Valen - a messenger character that Weimer, the same guy who made Ascension and the Solaufein mod - made joinable. She's a vampire, though with special armour to keep her from being too badly affected by sun (though she works better at night). One can only gain her by taking Bodhi's side in the guild war.
The team slot for Imoen isn't even an issue, that'll open up on it's own. I just hope I don't have the same problem I did last time I tried playing the game with the Imoen mod in - it narfed up in the reunion scene in the Spellhold maze - I think Imoen vanished on me.
As for that mod, it's finally working, though I had to go into the Global Variables tab in ShadowKeeper and reset it.
