I can't help it, I think I can classify myself as a frustrated storyteller. Computer games that don't have a particularly set backstory end up with me inventing one - like me making up reasons for the Org in The Sims 2, or trying to clarify obscure back-histories, like I once did with FFVIII.

This time, it's an oldie - Icewind Dale.

I find myself making up a history for my team in the game, or more particularly, for the first two members of it, Illyana Icequeen and Cailya Brightsteel.

Once upon a time there were two little girls. One was the daughter of a brave and noble paladin, the other the daughter of a moderately successful merchant.

The merchant and his wife were actually quite happy to have the friendship of the paladin, because he was of a higher social rank than them and they had ambitions of social advancement.

Both fanilies had hopes for their daughters, the merchant hoped to gain a good marriage to a young man of high class for his daughter and the paladin had similar hopes for his. Both girls however showed an interest in learning how to fight, and while the paladin was quite happy to let his daughter follow in his footsteps the merchant was less pleased.

As the two girls grew older, the paladin's daughter had to help her friend to dodge her parents, gaining lessons for her by hiding them behind social engagements, and later helping her find a teacher when her interests divided to include a wish to learn magic.

The paladin's daughter eventually fulfilled her father's wishes, becoming a paladin in her own right, ready to seek adventure and bring justice where it was lacking.

The merchant's daughter had also advanced well in her goals, but discovery of her "insubordination" had brought her parents' wrath down upon her, so in a desperate move, she ran away from home, join her paladin friend on the road.

The two travelled north, for they had always had a facination with the wild snowy regions where civilization is at it's thinnest. As they travelled, the merchant's daughter made a new identity for herself, changing her looks by way of dress, hair colour hair style, and changing her name to that of a childish fancy she had once play-acted with her friend.
Her paladin friend vowed never to reveal her true name, for doing so would leave the young mage vulnrable to enemies.

Eventually the two came to the snowy North, they met other adventurers and became a team, and would eventually find themselves involved in a serious adventure, saving the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale from great peril, and with all six of their band being proud adventurous young women, they would show just how strong females of any race can be.
