I have been contemplating for a while the paradox that Ultimecia's powers represent. See, Ultimecia dies, Edea inherits her powers, passes them on to Rinoa, and when Rinoa eventually dies she will pass them on and they will be passed down the succession of witches until Ultimecia inherits them.
One great big loop with Ulti's powers circling endlessly through time.
I had come up with an idea in my mind for how that would not exist - one that would leave the possibilty open for the Orphanage Gang to have more sorceress trouble without Rinoa going mad or being killed - simply put, there are at least two lines of inheritance at that point in history. So somewhere out there, there's another sorceress besides Rinoa, one who has the core of what will eventually be Ultimecia's sorcerous inheritance.
If someone were to use this in a fanfic I wouldn't blame them for making it all one sorceress, but I do have second tale on it - that there are still other sorceresses - plural - out there that have only small amounts of power in comparision to Rinoa and in the time between "now" (Squall's era) and the "future" (Ultimecia's era) all those individual bits of sorcery get funnelled by time and inheritance lines into one single sorceress who takes on the name Ultimecia.
But anyway, the basic plotbunny that bit me and prompted me to write this post is, what if that Other Sorceress (this goes on the idea of a singular sorceress aside from Rinoa) appears and becomes a problem? She wants SeeD to kill her because if they do and Rinoa inherits her powers it will cause a temporal mess that could tear reality apart because then the powers Ultimecia passed to Edea would become a paradox.
SeeD would be forced to find a way to kill the sorceress and have someone other than Rinoa on hand to inherit them because Rinoa would have to refuse them.
The other outgrowth of all of this is that somewhere, in Ultimecia's era, there would have to be another sorceress holding out, keeping Rinoa's powers out of Ultimecia's hands. To my mind, I see this sorceress as being an ally to SeeD - like Edea and Rinoa.
Ehh... *Shrug*
