Advent Children Dub

Well I've watched it! I took notes on my thoughts on the dub too. ^_^
I think
turk_elena was the one who said Elena sounded like Rainbow Brite, and I have to say? No bloody kidding!!! Her voice is too... cartoony-cute.
In the scene in the wasteland, where the Trio are first seen, Yazoo sounds like he's on drugs. Seriously. He's so totally out of it it's not funny! He doesn't really improve much throughout the whole movie either for that matter.
As well as that, there's one line that Kadaj has that is just badly done. What he said in English escapes me (memory for small details disappears almost instantly on me) but it was something in reply to a question from Yazoo and the english just had... too much. In the japanese he said something like "Uhh huh" and the mouth movements just don't match in the english.
Rufus sounds like some sort of TV voiceover guy. Not only in voice but in the way he spoke too - he always sounded too calm, even when Kadaj tossed over Tseng and Elena's ID cards. One would think maybe that'd serve him well when he starts coming back into the public eye again.
Zack? Perfect. Just perfect.
Loz is an oversized child.
Moogle Girl sounds too old. She sounds like someone in their twenties was trying to do "child", not like a real child. Even Marlene sounded like a real child.
"Dilly dally, shilly shally" is the single daftest line EVER!!! And Tifa says it twice, and louder the second time! That just makes her sound sillier!
Kadaj is a damn street preacher.
Aeris sound so airy she almost seems to be taking whatever drug Yazoo is on. She also took speach lessons from... Captain Kirk. She does the same daft pausing in the middle of almost everything... she says.
Vincent's voice grates on me. It's too deep and has a gravelly tone to it that the japanese voice didn't. Vincent's japanese voice is totally TEH SMEX.
The "peons" line - the one in place of the badly understood line Yazoo had about trust - is the best. ^_^
Reno and Rude - perfect double act. XD
Cid? Please be spending more time around Denzel if it means he will come out with lines line that "son of a bitch!" one?
Cait's accent is great. XDDD
So is Cid's - somehow a the southern hick tone to him is very fitting.
The scene where Kadaj is screaming "Mother!" in the church? Reminds me so fucking much of Luke Skywalker screaming "No! No! No!" after Vader drop his soon to be over-used plot device.
I still think Yuffie should have had an asian accent. She's from Wutai, a place that was made stereotypically asian. Conclusion? She should have had an asian accent.
Barret is so Mr T.
Yuffie's "Royal pain in the ass" line is just great. ^_^
Cait? Again, XDDD. Love the accent!
The "Hisashiburi da na" scene - Sephiroth's voice is totally TEH SMEX.
Seph is not speaking in an outdoor voice. Cloud manages to speak like he's outside but Sephiroth sounds like abedroom indoor voice.
I don't like Nanaki's voice. He's also taking the drug Yazoo and Aeris are on.
I thought I caught a few scenes where there was more footage than was in the avi copy I got from Gnome but that may just be a lack of attention on my part.
The visuals were brighter - slightly more washed out than my avi copy.
I also watched through the Reminicience of Final Fantasy VII - I'm actually glad of that - really. The FMVs are clearer in it than they are in the game. I suspect that in the game they are stretched out of proportion a bit on the screen I have (it's always surprises me a little how small screencaps come up when I paste them into Paint - none of my caps are size altered) so the quality on the DVD is a great thing to see - especially considering I saw the Northern Crater FMV - when Seph summons Meteor and the Weapons are released - only a few days ago and seeing it in DVD quality is great.
The line where Vincent tells Cloud to pass on a message to Yuffie telling her not to phone him is funny too.
So... mrrr. There's things it'll take me some time to get used to - Yazoo's voice, Rufus' voice, Vincent's voiceSephiroth's totally bedroom voice - problem is, I have long since gotten over my initial rush of fangirlishness for the movie thanks to constantly playing it on Media Player while doing stuff online that I'm not sure I'll watch the DVD all that much. Oh well. *Shruggle*
I think

2006-05-04 04:51 (UTC)Well, i did the terrible sin of watching the film first with the dubbing (not with the original voices and english subtitles as i usually like too) - because i couldn't find my glasses, and by the time i did, i was tired, and couldn't be bothered reading subtitles. So i didn't have cool asian voices to compare the english dubbing with.
Nevertheless, i agree with most of what you say!!! :D hahahahahahaha!!! Half the crew are on drugs!! Totally!! I was like "Yazoo is so spacing on something! o_0" But i just figured he was kinda a spaced-out sort guy. The whole trio was. So yeah.
Vincent and Sephiroth's voices are sex. But then, i just love both those boys, and i heart deep sexy voices. I can't wait to get a chance to listen to the original japanese voices this weekend - from what you say, Vincent's original japanese voice is better. I also didn't mind Rufus' too much. Again - the deep voice does it for me, and the lack of anything better to compare it against. He *was* impossibly composed the entire way through though. I think he still did a reasonable job, trying to put emotion in his voice, especially when his character was covered half the time, restricting certain facial reactions and body language.
Sephiroth........... Every. Line. He. Says. Makes. Me. Melt. Especially:- "Ooohh.. where did you find this strength from?" & "Get down on your knees. I want you to beg for forgiveness!" (exact wording may be a little off - my memory for details isn't always so great either!) But OMG - my knees quibble with teh sex! I hope the japanese Seph is as good!
Aeris.... "Let's go.................................. Cloud." Ok - did she forget his name or something? ;P
Waai! I love the "peons" jab too! hahahahaha! ^_^ And the whole bomb scene... "So, partner", & "You love it!" ;D
The scene with Cloud & Aeirs and Zack at the end... nearly broke my heart. In a good way :)
I imagine most of the bad english dubbing is because the english voice overs were probably rushed. I mean - how long did the japanese voice actors take on dubbing? Like, over a year to perfect it? The english voice-overs probably only spent a few weeks or months. And i think it was you i was talking with about earlier, how they just want to get actor 'names' rather than someone who would do a really good job, and would sound more like that character.
*shrugs* ahh well. i still love it muchly. :D

2006-05-04 05:07 (UTC)Reno and Rude are so married.
Yeah, as at least one review I read said, a lot of the english voice acting sounds too much like they're reading off a page instead of seriously getting into the heads of these characters. It's too many people who have no experience voice acting and the whole thing was too rushed. They didn't take enough time to get it right.
Steve Burton - Cloud's voice - at least got it mostly right, but given that he's played Cloud before, for both of the main KH games, he's got more experience under the belt than many of them - certainly more than Mena Suvari who was definately hired for Big Name Attraction value only.

2006-05-04 07:10 (UTC)Checked... She did.
And Sephiroth is voiced by the guy who voiced Nooj in X-2, if you ever get a chance to play that. I haven't seen the dub yet, but I can see that voice working for Seph, as long as he changes it just a tad. Otherwise I'm gonna keep going "AAAAH! NOOJ POSSESSED HIM!"
How was Rachael Leigh Cook? She's a "big name person," yeah, but I thought she did pretty good in KHII, and her voice for Tifa seemed to fit very well. And I guess they replaced the "zuru zuru" line with that stupid one for her? When she's berating Cloud after they both woke up? I was wondering what they were doing to put there... Never thought it'd be something that stupid.
Cid's voice wasn't that great in my opinion in KH - he was trying too hard to sound old or something, but I've heard, and so I hope, that he does better in AC. And apparently I'm the only one who likes Mena Suvari's voice for Aerith, but hey, personal preference. I think the tone of voice fits her a lot better than Mandy Moore's did.

2006-05-04 07:26 (UTC)RLC did pretty good in my opinion, I did have a momentary thought that her voice was too high for how I imagine Tifa but I also had the exact same feeling when I first watched the japanese dub too.
The phrase "dilly dally" is not too bad on it's own because - as I have seen some people say - it's a phrase that already exists, but I personally think the "shilly shally" half of it is the really stupid bit. Those aren't even words as far as I know, they should have just repeated "dilly dally" four times instead, it may have cut the daftness down by a third at least (it'd still be daft, but as daft).
I have heard Cid's voice was worse in KH2 - I have also heard Aerith was too so I think KH2 was the learning curve for both. I haven't heard KH!Cid though, and I only heard one very short line from Aerith in a video interviewing Mena Suvari and she sounded just as "airy" there.
Maybe part of my reaction against Suvari is that I see Aeris as mostly very down-to-earth and Suvari doesn't make her sound like that at all.
I have never heard Nooj's voice. Hell, I didn't even know Nooj had the same voice! That's going to make playing X-2 fun (when I eventually get it).

2006-05-04 09:27 (UTC)And yup, she was Rainbow Bright, or at least that's what my source said. Good source. But yeah, I suspect KH was the learning curve for both Chris and Mena. My problem with Mandy Moore was that she made Aerith sound... way too "light". I'm not saying Aerith has to have a heavy voice, but she always made her sound rather "floaty," like she was in a dream, or like she was nothing but sweetness and light. (My Aerith-muse is rolling her eyes at that... she says it's too boring to be that way.) Half the time in KH I was thinking that yeah, Mena was doing the same thing, but the tone of her voice was always better for me. Maybe she just needs to give her words a little more weight?
Though I gotta say, we can't entirely blame the actors for the bad lines. The script writers and directors are just as much to blame. You know the American people doing that just weren't as focused on it as the Japanese.

2006-05-04 17:46 (UTC)Ahh yes, Sony Pictures America simply didn't take it seriously enough - too much rush in trying to get it out methinks.

I can't necessarily blame SPA - how many times were they told that the release date had been pushed back? It was ridiculous.
