I have idly been toying with a Squall-Becomes-A-Sorcerer idea for a little while (not surprisingly, growing off of my previous plotbunnies) and I couldn't help but plot out a history of sorcery in the process.
Hyne, Sorcery, and the civilizations of Terra.
Before I start, a few notes:
Under the influence of a fanfic that is an old favourite of mine I am temporarily branding the FF8 Planet with the name "Terra".
I am also sticking to my personal belief that the Lifestream model of world construction, as depicted in FFVII, FFIX, FFX and FFSW also holds true for FFVIII. In the game, it was never an issue so exact world construction was never addressed.
I am also borrowing at least one concept from another FFs - specificaly FF7.
So who and what was Hyne? The truth was Hyne came from beyond the Terran biosphere - from space. It took the form of a human male and dominated the peoples of Terra with amazing powers that made them name him a god.
Hyne's powers allowed him to tap into the natural powers of Terra itself - to tap the River Of Souls and use it's power to perform miraculous acts. It also allowed him to call up powerful spirits - previously worshiped as gods - to serve him.
Hyne took control of the ancient world, welding it into a great empire, founded in the continent of Centra. From there he ruled the entire world, with the Guardian Forces acting as his enforcers.
However, Hyne's powers were so powerful he was destabilizing Terra's natural balance with his casual usage of the planet's own power. Terra made a move to save itself, setting loose the Great Beasts - the WEAPONs. Hyne eventually fell to the WEAPONs but as he did so, he in turn killed all but one, Ultima WEAPON. One other WEAPON also lived, but Terra had not called that one up to fight Hyne yet, keeping it asleep until all else failed.
Hyne's powers however could not be absorbed by Terra upon the dictator-god's death. The powers were splintered into a multitude of fragments that were absorbed by a myriad of natives. Any women who absorbed the power showed an ability to control it, any males who gained them eventually died (some suffering madness before their demise), the power being passed on to the nearest receptive woman.
For a while these powers remained minor, each Sorceress created having only minor abilities, the sum total of which did not strain Terra as Hyne had.
Hyne's empire collapsed soon after his death, giving rise to several successive empires after it, and in the time sorcery was a relatively minor thing - women who became Sorceresses initially seen with suspicition and sometimes faced with outright persecution but in other places becoming a respected and feared part of society for the magics they could use.
Slow consolidation of Hyne's inheritance gradually gave rise to more and more powerful Sorceresses over time, as one Sorceress would inherit the powers of another on her death and their combined power would become one in the inheritor. Eventually power hungry women would rise, seeking to add to their own powers by killing off other Sorceresses so as to gain their powers. This was the when the first Sorceress Queens started to appear - powerful women with the power and charisma to control countries.
It is during this stage that parts of the Centran civilization set out to establish empires beyond their homeland. They colonized the lands of Galbadia, Balamb, Trabia and Esthar, dominating the native peoples of those lands easily with advanced technology, Guardian Forces and powerful sorceresses on their side.
These civilizations flourished in new lands and along with them, so did the Descendants of Hyne as very powerful Sorceresses gained the upper hand, wars breaking out between the empires - between the ruling Sorceress Queens.
The First Sorceress War came to a climactic end when the Witch Queen of Dollet died while summoning the Crystal Pillar - an artifact located on the Moon. The Crystal Pillar crashed in Centra, in the midst of an unusually large Lunar Cry (an event that had periodically happened on Terra ever since the dawn of time) and the Centra Empire - and much of the ancient continent it was established on - was destroyed.
I the century since, Dollet has fallen out of power, Galbadia has not had a Sorceress since it's last Queen died 300 years ago, Balamb and Trabia have become quiet countries and Esthar - as it has ever been - has isolated itself from most of the rest of the world - a habit formed when it was colonized by refugees escaping from a particularly tyrannical Sorceress in Centra.
Within the last fifty years, there has risen in Esthar a Sorceress named Adel - a tyrant in the mould of Sorceress Queens of old - dominating the technological country with an iron fist, waging war with anyone who stood in her way.
Her reign came to an abrupt and mysterious end seventeen years ago and no clue has been uncovered as to why, due to Esthar's isolationism, and to the radio interference that has afflicted the world since. It is unknown whether this radio interference has something to do with Adel's fall but the timing is too close to be a pure co-incidence.
Since Adel, no new Sorceresses have arisen. Given the stigma that the great Sorceress Queens have cast on all of Hyne's descendants that whoever has inherited Adel's power may be hiding the fact, not wishing to be like her predecessors.
In the latter part this does presume that the sorceress Edea inherited from originally (as a child), was not one in the public eye. It also takes a POV that is external to Esthar, as it does say Adel died.
It also does not cover game events, or else it would have extra statements on the end about Edea, the Lunatic Pandora, Adel being alive and Rinoa being the latest Sorceress.
The actual Squall-Becomes-A-Sorcerer plotbunny has that Rinoa goes nuts - for whatever reason. Squall has Griever - a future version of himself. For some reason, with Squall being alone while facing Rinoa, the Sorceress powers somehow end up in him instead - something to with his dual nature, having a future version of himself junctioned.
The eventual effect of this - when he dies - turns him into a GF, and the powers end up doing something like what happened when Hyne died - they splinter into bits and a new generation of minor sorceresses arise from it.
Something extra I thought of, because the line of inheritance is messed up by Squall, Rinoa never quite returns to the Planet and Ultimecia is the way she returns to life. Time Compression is an attempt to gather all of Hyne's power together again, in one single sorceress. Omega being in her castle may be an attempt be the Planet to deal with her if she succeeds.
