I have been idly contemplating a different version of the game events, where Squall can communicate a lot more clearly with Laguna in the "dream world" and ends up becoming something like friends with him.

The problem is how to handle Rinoa. If Squall doesn't fall for her then other reasons have to be invented for why a hell of a lot of the Third Disk even happens.

See, the problem with this game is it's not all that easy to subvert the events, because Squall has to enter Time Compression and then have trouble getting back out again so that SeeD can even exist in the first place. Time Compression would probably eventually happen anyway as long as Rinoa is possessed and if she's possessed something has to be done about her but if Squall doesn't undergo his sudden "I want her back!" phase other reasons have to be invented.

Now that sounds circular.

So I have found myself fostering a possible Zell/Rinoa plot. Zell, because of the scenes with Rinoa asking him to get Squall's Greiver ring.

In the end though, Squall still does most of the stuff, but there is a lot more pressure on him from the others to do it. The space station - well unlike the last two games I have run Zell goes up with Squall and Rinoa. Squall's reasons for going up aren't so fixated on Rinoa - they're more to do with him wanting to talk to Ellone - Rinoa is just the reason used that allows him to go up.

Oh, and a scene that has drifted around my head for some time - what if Squall is able to see who the "President" is in that space suit? Well surprise for both of them, to see each other there, but Laguna would still end up being dragged off after telling Squall to take care of Ellone.

Because Squall is the only one in the pod in a space suit he still has to be the one who goes after Rinoa then (I am debating who exactly Ellone does 'connect' with to find out how Rinoa is - I'm inclined to keep it Squall because he'd be annoyed at the other part of the whole ring issue), but the scene in the Rag's cockpit is far from the blatant lovey-dovey thing it is in the game. Rinoa is still wishing she could have Squall as her boyfriend (Zell did kinda soften the blow of Squall refusing to hand over his ring for her) but he is rather harsh with her over it.

Rescuing her from being sealed is yet another barrage of peer pressure, and the actual act itself is more of a team effort.

The scene at the orphanage afterwards would be totally different too, with Squall wandering off on his own, tired of all the apparent matchmaking that everyone else seems intent on for him.

Finally the call comes through from Kiros - sure Squall is already aware of where Laguna is but after the rescue of Rinoa doesn't think it wise that any of their group go near Esthar City at this point.

Squall doesn't get to speak privately to Laguna until they are on the Ragnarok, but when Laguna mentions having something to talk to him about later Squall says he already knows - he had guessed between the "dreams", the reaction of the D-District Moombas, Ellone's calling Laguna "Uncle" when Squall found her in the B-Garden library, talking to Edea on the way to Esthar about how he got to the orphanage and finally having it confirmed when he talked to Elle on the space station. They don't have time to talk much more though as the Rag has reached the Lunatic Pandora and Squall is called to the cockpit.

Everything else goes to script - fight Seifer, fight Adel, entering Time Compression, fighting Ulti's pet monsters, fighting Ulti, Greiver, Ulti.

Escaping Time Compression is different though, Squall still gets lost, trying to find something to consentrate on to draw him back. His attempt at getting to the Orphanage ends up with him seeing the transfer of Ulti's powers to Edea, then he tries to consentrate on Laguna instead but gets dumped in the wrong time again - ending up a month or so after Laguna was instated as President of Esthar. They chat (and maybe more - the underlying L/S this whole idea is based on shows it's face) and Squall tries again to get back to his own time, finally ending up wherever Laguna (the current time-period version) is (my personal image is on the Ragnarok, having gotten away from the Lunatic Pandora on it as Time Compression started).

Yes, that would dictate that Laguna knew Squall on sight, though he also probably had inteligence reports about the events going on in the outside world (a country like Esthar would be very unwise - even with it's isolation - to totally ignore the outside world. The government at least would have spies out watching and reporting on everything that happens) and probably would have first heard about Squall's involvement from that - his first indication that Squall is around, and active. There is also a point that when Squall first realises how far back the dreams are set he avoids telling Laguna much of the future - as he knows it, and never does get around to telling Laguna his surname which may be a clue if it is, as fanon has branded it, Raine's maiden name (the name "Squall" being one Raine chose, so no paradox there either).

It would take a lot of careful handling to write this into a fic - the whole thing about several Third Disk events being caused by peer pressure would be too easy to mess up methinks.

Ahh, well, another bunny for the collection!

In other news, I need a new set of headphones. My current set are starting to fail. I'd also like to get some CD-Rs, the DVDs are all very well but there may times when I want to record a only a small amount and it's a bit of waste putting it on a DVD. I can probably get a ten pack at either Big W or at Coles - it depends on whether Mum wants to go to the Hyperdome - we've swapped our groccery shopping to Coles instead of Bi-Lo so we're not going down to the Hyperdome every week anymore (the nearest Coles is north of us in a smaller centre, Bi-Lo and Big W are south in the Hyperdome).

I still reckon you should just have Squall and Rinoa as best, if mismatched, friends, thus saving the problem of hooking her up with Zell. Squall seems like the sort to do suicidal third-disc things for his best friends.

Yeah, that's mostly the conclusion I have come to since I originally write this plotbunny out. Keep in mind I do have my ups and downs in opinion on Rinoa and I suspect the when I wrote it, it wasn't at the highest level it's ever been.
