mimi_sardinia: (Squall)

Okay, since I have at least one new watcher on this journal, who commented on my last post mentioning this plotbunny, I will reitterate my stance on fanfiction writing.

I have written fanfiction in the past and know I can be a half-decent writer but I also know from that time that I don't have the endurance and motivation to keep on one single fic over multiple chapters. If it's not an idea I can write into a short oneshot it the most it will get is a synopsis posted on here so others can at least see the idea, and if they want to, borrow it or parts of it.

That said...

Okay, given my fondness for the idea of Griever=Squall I kinda feel sorry for Griever, having to fight Squall.

This really is and extention of my previous Griever=Squall bunny, which basically goes along the lines that Griever survives the fight and gets free of Ultimecia and basically hides within Squall's head (partly because Squall beat him, partly because Squall is his past self) and because they are two versions of the same person the connection between them, when Griever lets Squall know he's there, is far stronger than a normal GF junction giving Squall far more direct access to Griever's powers and Griever the ability to directly control Squall's body, to the extent of transforming it into his own (as opposed to the normal way of summoning, where the summoner is sent to another dimension while the Summoned is present).

At this point I have to say that I don't have faith in Squall and Rinoa staying together. I won't start using those tired excuses of him being young and he wouldn't know what he really wants at that age because I think they're bullshit. I think it's more of a case of Rinoa expecting Squall to totally change whereas while he may change some he will never totally lose his antisocial behaviours - they'll just resurface when he's in less than happy moods.

So things go fine for Squall, for a while after Ultimecia's defeat. SeeD have plenty of work dealing with the mess that has become of both Trabia and Galbadia Gardens. Naturally they have a fair bit of suport from Esthar - a good deal of which probably takes the official form of contracts to deal with the monsters summoned by the Lunar Cry - and unoffically Laguna's good will, the least part of which not being because of certain family connections.

Things don't last with Rinoa however. She expects too much from Squall which annoys him and makes him act broody and avoid her. That hurts her feelings in turn and gets her angry at him. Their relationship starts going into a spiral of them getting angry at each other, blowing up in a vicious row and then making up only for it to happen again next time things get too much, gradually getting worse and worse as it goes on until an eventual breakup happens.

In my mind I see Rinoa being the one to dump Squall and Squall being oblivious to just how bad things are, therefore reacting badly enough that he ends up taking some time off and reluctantly takes some advice to get out of Garden for a bit and go visit Laguna.

It is exposure to Laguna's presence that first wakes Griever.

Squall finds having Griever junctioned far different from normal and Griever reluctantly admits the reason why - it's because he is Squall's future, he is Squall Leonhart only far older and having become a GF. He has been quiet up until now because he was injured in the fight where he was junctioned to Ultimecia, but he won't explain why he's woken up only now, and particularly why in Laguna's presence.

Griever becomes mostly a silent partner to Squall, making for two GFs Squall never unjunctions (I admit, the fanon that Shiva is his favourite has stuck, and stuck hard. My current play of the game I only once handed Shiva over to someone else, and that was to Edea at the point where Squall had gone into space and the active team had Zell and Edea on it).

This is where it goes into the completely L/S part.

Squall ends up depending on Laguna for comfort in the aftermath of his breakup with Rinoa and things eventually turn into something far less fillial.

It gets a bit vague about what happens in this stage, though the idea that Squall eventually leaves Garden to stay in Esthar always drifts in the back of my mind. Either way, during the rest of Squall's life things settle into something that constitutes "happy", with Laguna, until some sort of disturbance causes problems and someone tries to assassinate Laguna which sets Griever off badly but Laguna is dying and Squall panics, trying to use Griever's abilities to keep Laguna from slipping away but by doing so triggers his own final transformation into a Guardian Force.

Neither was he totally unseccessful in saving Laguna. While Laguna dies, the newly transformed Griever does prevent his soul from returning to the Lifestream (I have no problems with imagining the FF8 world being based on the Lifestream model, as all the FF worlds since 7 have been. It's just that it never became an issue exactly how the world was constructed in the storyline of 8) but he is dormant, or some such state. The two versions of Griever - young and old - keep him safe between them anyway, not wishing to give up the one person that means everything to them.

Squall Leonhart goes down in SeeD history not only for his defeat of Ultimecia but also for the puzzling fact that he did not die but turned into a Guardian Force, something that would likely prompt plenty of debate as to whether other GFs started out as human as well.

Griever settles in being a true GF and gradually builds the reputation as being the most powerful GF ever until Ultimecia eventually appears and tries to capture him. At this point the two halves of Griever decide to part, the younger allowing himself to fall under Ultimecia's control, the elder going into hiding, and keeping Laguna with him. This means that when the younger Griever faces his 17-year-old human self he goes back into the past with him and becomes the "older" Griever, going through the whole cycle again and being in part the catalyst that turns Squall Leonhart into Griever.

The older Griever is finally free and finds he has, in part, been responsible for the creation of another GF when Laguna wakes from his dormant state a GF in his own right.

Yeah, you can sneer all you want at the implied sappiness of them finally being together forever.

One of the things I twisted the view of this idea to is how a post-Ultimecia SeeD reacts to having this new GF (who I idly tagged with the title of "Beloved" as his GF name). This particular idea included Griever basically disappearing and Beloved being the one responding to anyone trying to summon him. The young SeeD is surprised when summoning Beloved the first time to find that the dimension he is shunted into has another person already there, and over time and numerous summonings, gradually works out that Beloved didn't rise because Griever died, but that Griever is still alive and well and just needs time to recover a lifetime of thinking Laguna was never going to wake again.

Somewhere in here this bunny has decided to start courting another bunny, one prompted by a [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants rant and they are now getting into a polyamorous relationship with the whole Ulti=Rinoa theory.

This gave me the idea of it being found out that Squall has gotten involved with Laguna and some of his friends see it as their responsibility to set him straight, only he doesn't appreciate it.

So Rinoa dumps Squall. Squall didn't think things were quite that bad so he takes it rather harshly when she does and ends up having to take time off (probably harrassed into doing so by Quistis) and spending time in Esthar.

Squall goes to Laguna, they end up involved and he eventually returns to his life in Garden, just with a secret affair with the man who may be his male genetic donor but whom he doesn't consider as a father.

This relationship gets found out, by Rinoa no less and she recruits some of the others in an effort to convince Squall that him sleeping with Laguna is WRONG.

Now as I mentioned above, the relationship is completely consensual and it has not perverted any father/son relationship between them because none really existed beforehand - or if it did it was a fragile wishful thing that died a happy death when they decided to ignore it in favour of something more intimate. Rinoa doesn't understand this however, and has at least Zell on her side and Quistis half convinced as well (I picked those two because they were definately adopted, even if life with her adoptive family didn't work out for Quistis). They do everything to keep Squall from getting away - getting back to Esthar - even to the extent of holding him prisioner in Balamb Garden.

There are of course parties who are worried about this situation, Laguna is obviously conserned when all of his attempts to contact Squall are blocked, Seifer sees what's happening (having by this point returned to Garden) and is unimpressed and Ellone gets worried when Laguna tells her how everyone keeps telling him Squall doesn't want to speak to him.

It is Ellone who makes the move to find out what's going on, going to B-Garden only to be told in harsh terms of Squall and Laguna's relationship. She goes to confront Laguna who admits to it, depressed and guilty over the whole thing plus worried over Squall.
Ellone decides she needs time to think about it, feeling the way Laguna reacted is totally in opposition to how Rinoa and Zell described the whole thing and eventually decides she needs to see the truth for herself, using her powers to see how it started. Even that leaves her confused because Rinoa told her Squall dumped her and went to Laguna.

After finding out everything she can Ellone decides that she has to suport Squall and Laguna and enlists Seifer to help get Squall out of Garden and back to Esthar. She communicates the plan to do so to Squall, via her powers, but he worries about the others having the greater power with the GFs they have junctioned.
He later gets a message, from Shiva, saying the GFs' loyalty is to him first and foremost because he was the leader of the group who defeated several of them - to the extent that the final blow that brought some of them down was Squall's. Squall doesn't want the GFs to totally abandon SeeD for his sake but Shiva insists that they will not allow themselves to be junctioned for use against Squall or anyone trying to rescue him. (As I said before, I do like the fanon accossiation between Squall and Shiva so I view it from a point of view that Shiva is fond of Squall and considers him her favourite human.)

So Seifer makes his move and kidnaps Squall, highjacking the Ragnarok (maybe with Raijin and Fujin aiding him) and when attempts are made to stop him they are left almost helpless because the GFs refuse to junction. The only GF that allows itself to be summoned is Griever, who turns and lunges at Rinoa, only to snatch her necklace off her and nothing else, dropping the chain and the other ring, keeping the Griever ring only.

Now I could see Rinoa being left to become obsessed about getting Squall back which eventually twists her until she vanishes and doesn't reappear again until she assumes the identity of Ultimecia, showing her contempt for GFs in general by perverting Tiamat into a monster and enslaving Griever in an act of vengence for something that he hasn't even done yet.

Ouch. That was long.

Many of them I cannot claim as original.

Thankye anyway and do! Go play! Squall is cute! So is Selphie, Irvine, Laguna, Rinoa and Ellone. Quistis isn't cute, she just beautiful. Seifer is gorgeous too, and smirky. And Kiros is hot.
