Hmm... armour... The problem is armour changes how they look, and frankly most of them don't really look like they're wearing any armour in FF7. At least nothing significant.
For sake of BG believability, I don't see why armour would be a problem, especially if they have dialogue portraits. As long as the sprutes are within a basic range of fitting them, then the brunt of visual identification would be taken up by the portraits.
