Actually, I am fairly regular at giving my thanks to shop attendants. It doesn't hurt to be politely grateful when you get good service.
On the other hand, I am not too sure about At Home thanks, which is a bit of a worry - there's a saying "Charity starts at home", but I think it can also apply to courtesy as well.
