Given that the current fic I'm reading had Sephiroth shave off all of his hair very early on (in a fit of denial) I got thinking about how he would disguise himself in a case of being reserected post-game.
So while thinking about the options of keeping his hair hidden somehow, trimming it (while the fic I mentioned makes the idea of him shearing the lot believable I think it a shame if he did) and even dyeing it, I came to the frame of mind that Sephiroth has bloody long hair!
Hell, the pics I have seen have it down to his backside at least and more than likely down to his knees. That's longer than any Tolkienian elf I have seen in either the movies or fanart.
To put it simply, hair that long would be hell to maintain. The Bint used to have long hair, as a child hers got long enough that it reached her backside and on and off through her teen years and on she's grown it out to shoulderblade length before cutting it all off again (and unless she's planning to do that again she needs another haircut) so practical experience with long hair is something we definately have.
If it's thick brushing needs to be taken in chunks, water would weigh it down like hell, drying would be a job-and-half and just keeping it half neat if you don't wear it braided or at least in a ponytail is next to impossible. I don't know how Seph would cope, I wince at the thought of how difficult brushing it would be after a busy day.
Oh, and on the thought of Seph dyeing his hair, it'd take at least 4 or so store-bought packets of dye to do if he didn't cut some of it off first.
