A scene like that has always been a part of the basic story - even back when I wrote my Griever/Squall 1 Sentence set. This is pretty-much not only giving a good reason for it, but also tying Griever's creation with the summon theory I read, which I paraphrased with the line "Guardian Forces did not create legends - legends created Guardian Forces".
