Okay, so I have a baby plotbunny that could easily be divided into two parts, though I built the idea as one whole idea.

It basically gives some history to how and why Squall has the Griever pendant and ring, tying it into his family history and his early relationship with Ellone.

So, the Leonhart family was once nobility. Minor nobility, but enough to own a lot of the lands around Winhill at one point in history. Their fortunes over time went downhill, as did their status until by the time of Raine's life it is just a bit of interesting town history that the lady who owns the tavern is the descendant of some lord back in the day that owned all these lands 'round here.

But anyway, Raine is the last of the firstborn line - her male ancestors were the heirs of the Leonhart line, and as such, Raine inherited the few Leonhart heirlooms left to the family, which include the Leonhart crests - the Sleeping Lion Heart ring and necklace, later called "Griever" by Squall.

As it happens, Raine's next door neighbours - nice couple, not been married long, the wife is pregnant too - are relatives, cousins of some degree (I decided the wife is Raine's 2nd cousin, once removed). Somewhere in Raine's family history (not necessarily on the Leonhart side either) there is an example of a child of one family member being adopted by someone else in the family*. This, along with affection for her cousin and her cousin's young daughter prompt Raine to adopt the child when her cousin is killed by Esthar troops.

Anyway, fast forward two years, Raine gets lumped with some northerner moron soldier who washed up injured. She nurses him back to health, he charms Ellone (Raine's cousin's child and now her adopted daughter) and eventually charms her and they marry. Esthari troops invade the town again and kidnap Ellone so Laguna goes haring off to rescue her, leaving Raine unknowingly pregnant.

Months go by as Laguna searches for a way into Esthar but he eventually finds it, gets Ellone, enlists in the Esthari resistance and sends Ellone home in the company of one of the other resistance members, so she's safe from Adel. Ellone arrives back in Winhill to find Raine very pregnant with Laguna's child.

The birth goes badly and Raine dies some time not long after.

As Raine always promised Ellone would inherit her beloved jewelery box, Ellone packs it with her belongings when she and Squall are to be sent off with Edea. In the jewelery box is, naturally, the Lion Heart necklace and ring.

It is due to being indoctrinated by Ellone from as soon as he could talk that Squall is a Leonhart. Later in life Ellone probably surmises she had forgotten Laguna's surname, but Leonhart stuck in her mind quite strongly, partly because she is a Leonhart herself, partly due to the necklace and ring, which Raine taught her would always belong to the baby (Squall, in other words).

Later, after Ultimecia passes on her powers to Edea and Ellone must be sent away for her own protection, one of Ellone's last acts before going is to give Squall the necklace and ring, reminding him he's a Leonhart and they are his treasures for him to keep. Squall takes that to heart.

Since then, GF amnesia has wiped the knowledge of how Squall got the jewelery from his memory, but not wiped how precious they are to him. Somewhere along the line he gives them their "Griever" name. He also has a copy of the pendant made to act as a counterweight for his gunblade.

So recap: Squall and Ellone are related by more than just adoption, and both descendants of the noble family Leonhart. The Griever necklace and ring are family heirlooms of Raine's, given to Squall by Ellone.

Points: The blood relationship and the story of the jewelery being family heirlooms don't have to be connected.

Just how closely Raine is related to Ellone's parents can be adjusted, I just picked second cousin once removed arbitrarily. A good chart for family relationships can be found here.

This could make interesting back story, or, if anyone can thing of something, a good basis of a story that has some connection to Squall's ancestry.

* This happened in my mother's family. Back in the days when unmarried mothers were a thing of shame, a relative of Mum's had a child before she married. The child got adopted by a married couple in the family - a sister of the biological mother actually. On that basis, I don't see why an orphan couldn't be adopted by a family member.

The Griever-bunny has officially adopted this as part of Guardianverse.
